In the stunning setting of the Sierra de Tramuntana (declared in 2011 a World Heritage Site by UNESCO) , include a modest land located between mountain ranges and stunning sea cliffs .

This valley , originally known as Valle de San José , adopted the name La Trappe after the settlement on the grounds of a community of Trappist monks fleeing the French Revolution, called at Mallorca in the early nineteenth century in order to establish a religious community.

What gives importance to this environment is the combination of different factors that make one project Biological Reserve in Mallorca. Its natural and cultural values, its strategic geographical location opposite the islet Dragonera Natural Park, its pioneering role in the declaration of protected areas , their experimental and innovative character and the participation of civil society , make this one of the natural areas of the Balearic higher value and projection , which fully apply the concept of stewardship .

La Trappe is an estate of 81 hectares, located in the south- west end of the Sierra de Tramontana . It was acquired in 1980 by the GOB thanks to popular, and institutional entities in order to preserve and conserve threatened by a proposed subdivision and development support values .

The farm consists of two valleys oriented west, ending in a cliff above the sea, and saw a small inside .

It belongs to the municipality of Andratx, the less rain in the Sierra and the driest Mallorca.

These factors determine a barren landscape accented by two large fires that wins La Trappe. In this environment contrasting green and fertile terraces covering one of the two valleys of the farm on which the houses of La Trappe, the former Trappist monastery are located .

Since 1980 , the GOB has carried out maintenance and restoration of La Trappe : improved access road , clearing mines and gutters, … restoring the terraces and in the early years also restoration begins the former monastery of the ” house forns dels ” and the main part of the house is packed . All this work made possible volunteers and various fields.

Since 1993 , thanks to the initial support of the LEADER Programme , has established the management and maintenance of the property. It works on architectural restoration (houses, mill , terraces, … ) , agriculture and livestock recovery ( Simbra of pasture and orchards, livestock use in vegetation control … ) , forest recovery and prevention fire , environmental education ( school visits and other groups, trade publications … ), maintenance , attention to visitors, volunteers, etc. .

In 1997, the GOB signed an agreement with the Consell de Mallorca to restore and convert the old monastery in a mountain retreat to promote hiking , scientific research , environmental education and nature conservation . The restoration work was initiated in 2000 with the recovery of the terraces surrounding the monastery through a ” school workshop La Trappe ” promoted by the CIM and the INEM , in collaboration with the GOB, and continued consolidation the main structure of the monastery and rehabilitation of different spaces.

Unfortunately , the work of the Consell stop after a few years and are entering the houses gradually been abandoned . The fact that since the last agreement was signed in May 2007 , the institution does not carry out the implementation of the project makes the GOB requested the termination of the agreement in March 2012 , thus regaining control over the houses and the area around them , in order to seek new sources of funding to restoration.

Currently there are two projects , if the GOB gets carried out in collaboration with institutions that allow funding will allow the restoration of the ” house of forns ” and the former chapel of the monastery , thus enabling two spaces permit the development of various activities related to the property and its environment.
